MIGRAIN: Media codes - Reading an image
1) Analyse this RBK 50 Cent advert using the media codes you learned in the lesson: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Write a paragraph for each one exploring the way meanings are created using those media codes
Technical Codes: Uses a close up of 50 Cents face clearly showing a facial expression of a serious or mad nature. There is a prominent use of lowkey lighting creating a very dark and gritty aesthetic, something that fits very well 50 Cent especially in the early days if his career. Sound is N/A. The image is edited with a text overlay using an inspirational and deep quote to connote meaning also following the dark, gritty aesthetic.
Written/Verbal codes: A text saying "I am what I am" as an inspirational message which aligns with 50 Cents very pride based ego and music aswell as the sporty nature of Reebok as a brand. This could help communicate that Reeboks products can help your performance.
Symbolic codes:
The body language on the image of 50 Cent implies seriousness and possibly pain or suffering. The dark colouring throughout the whole image helps to reinforce the dark feel within aswell as the suffering connotations. The use of serif font also helps to back up the more stoic, negative, and dark connotations shown in the image.
Narrative Codes: The filled in Os imply bullets
2) Next, analyse a print advert of your choice using the same media codes: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Make sure you add your chosen print advert using the 'Add image' button in blogger (use Google Images to find the advert first and save it to your pictures or downloads).
For both adverts, remember to put media language in bold or highlight/colour it.
When writing any media analysis, always ask yourself key questions: What meanings are being created for the audience? How? Who do you think is the target audience for this product and what effect might the product have on that audience? How does it address/attract that audience? What are the deeper connotations created by the media language choices in the product and do they reflect aspects of culture, society or ideology? se media codes.
For both adverts, remember to put media language in bold or highlight/colour it.
Written codes: The text of "nuthin but king shi*" implies the street nature to outkasts music aswell as the inspirational tones theh have had in their music before too. The website link at the bottom creates an easy way to access the music.
Symbolic codes: The hats of the members may symbolize high status and respect in the community. The actual symbol having a crown implies how they are at the top of the industry and are better than everyonr around too.
Narrative Codes: The hats may be conveying a mob type narrative. The orange outline could be
